Cats Manila in July 2010 Features Lea Salonga as 'Grizabella'

CATS, the second longest-running musical in Broadway history, will have a limited run at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) beginning July 24, 2010. This production will feature Tony winner Lea Salonga as Grizabella, and an international cast that will primarily come from Australia, and the United Kingdom. Philippines had a quick interview with Lea while enroute to Toronto, Canada for her U.S. and Canada 2009 concert tour. "The tour has been going along very nicely! We've had very receptive and enthusiastic audiences at every stop, and it makes me happy we've been greeted so wonderfully. I think CATS in Manila is also a touring production. But I'll only be part of it in Manila," she said.

"I'll be playing Grizabella (aka the non-dancer part). As for what attracts me to her, besides the big song? Grizabella is The cat that shone in the spotlight once upon a time, and doesn't anymore. She's scraggy, dirty, ugly, and relives the Glory Days in her mind. It'll be interesting to play someone that once shone, and no longer does," noted Lea.

Oct 9-10: Likahang Habi: Market Encounter 2 @ the Yuchengco Museum

Highly Recommended -- especially for those looking for distinctly Filipino items for the home, unique gift items for Christmas and one-of-a kind fashion accessories/wraps.

Home-grown Textiles Up for Grabs This October
In celebration of Museum Month this October, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), alongside partner institutions, the Yuchengco Museum and the Lopez Memorial Museum, join forces to bring the public the best of Philippine textiles.

The event, Likahang Habi: Market Encounter 2, will be hosted by the Yuchengco Museum on October 9 and 10, 2009 from 10am to 7pm at the RCBC Plaza Courtyard in Makati City. The 2-day activity will bring a mélange of traditional and contemporary indigenous textiles from weaving communities all across the country—loom woven cotton from the Easter Weaving School in Baguio City, cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, various blends of piña silk from Palawan, patadyong and hablon from Antique, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak from dream-inspired patterns, embellished textiles, and other hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind clothing items. Fashion items will be seen in the banana fiber and silk items of Dita Sandico-Ong and the piña-knits of Lulu Tan Gan, amongst others.

An exhibition featuring antique indigenous textiles and a lecture surveying the regional development of the local textile industry will complement the bazaar.

Likahang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is an offshoot of Market Encounter initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium held last February at the National Museum. For information, call the Yuchengco Museum at (+632) 889 1234 or email

Sept 25: FREE English Rakugo-Japanese Sit-Down Comedy in English at the Ayala Museum

Japanese Sit-down Comedy to be staged in Manila

The Japan Foundation, Manila and the Ayala Museum present a unique traditional Japanese performance art called "English Rakugo! Japanese Sit-Down Comedy in English" on Friday, September 25, 2009, 7pm at the Lobby of the Ayala Museum, Makati City. Admission is free.
Rakugo is a comic monologue in which a storyteller creates an imaginary drama through episodic narration.  Dating back to the 17th century, rakugo stories are narrated humorously and usually reflect traditional concepts and values which remain meaningful and entertaining today.
The rakugo is somewhat similar to American stand-up comedy wherein there is only one performer onstage doing a comic monologue or acting out a story.  However, rakugo, literally a story with a witty ending, is a "sit-down" comedy where the performer sits atop a small mattress on stage throughout his performance.  Additionally, a rakugo performer wears a traditional Japanese kimono and is usually equipped with a fan and a hand cloth which he skillfully employs to express various situations.
The Japan Foundation, Manila presented rakugo performances in Manila in 2003, 2004 and 2005 that have garnered overwhelmingly positive public response.
Returning to Manila this year is Kaishi Katsura, one of the major English Rakugo performers in Japan.  Although there are some 300 classic rakugo stories handed down through generations, Katsura is one type of performer who prefers to create his own original material.
Katsura has been a Rakugo performer since 1994 and, like other Rakugo performers, he underwent years of apprenticeship before being deemed worthy of performing the art.  As a traditional Japanese art form, the genre requires training, discipline, and perfection to uphold its quality standards.
This is not Katsura's first time in the Philippines.  He performed in Manila and Cebu in 2003 and 2005.  An international artist, Katsura has done over 180 performances worldwide. In 2007, Katsura was appointed Cultural Exchange Ambassador by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
"English Rakugo!" will also be staged in Cebu on Saturday, September 26, 7:00 pm at the Ayala Center. This performance is organized by the Japanese Consular Office in Cebu, in cooperation with the Japanese Association in Cebu, Inc., the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Cebu, Inc. and the Ayala Center.
While the event is open to the public, reservations are highly encouraged especially for the Ayala Museum show, as seating is limited.
For September 25 reservations, please call the Japan Foundation, Manila at telephone numbers 811-6155 to 58.
For more information on the event, you may log on to, official media partner of the JFM, or the Japan Foundation, Manila website:

Oct 10: Origami and gift wrapping workshop at Museo Pambata

Origami and Japanese gift wrapping workshops for children and adults will be held at Museo Pambata on Saturday, October 10, in cooperation with Sinag Arts Foundation.

The workshops will be facilitated by Etsuko Muneshige, a Japanese arts and crafts expert. She is the coordinator of the Japanese Wrapping Association.

Children and adults will learn the art of paper folding created and made famous by the Japanese. Origami is not only appreciated for its history but for its many uses and benefits. It is a hobby that costs very little and is known to increase focus and concentration. Origami is taken up by people who need to improve their psychomotor skills as is keeps the fingers busy. Origami has also been known to improve memory, logical reasoning and patience.

Gift-wrapping in Japan is historically related to good manners in gift-giving. The Japanese gift wrapping ritual is rich in symbolism which are shown through intricate pleats, flaps and hinges. The Japanese appreciates gift wrapping for its environmental benefits, through "Furoshiki," or using fabric as a gift wrapper.

Fees and schedule of the workshops are as follows: Origami for Kids (ages seven and above only) 10:00-10:45 am, P250. Origami for Adults (ages 19 and above) 11:00 am to 12 noon, P700. Furoshiki Giftwrapping Workshop - 1:30 to 3:30, P700. Fees are inclusive of materials. There is limited seating for all workshops. Call 5231797 to 98 or email to reserve a seat.

Museo Pambata is located along Roxas Blvd. corner South Drive in Manila. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. It is closed Mondays and official holidays.
