May 19: SAN MIGUEL LIFESTYLE BREWS DEGUSTATION DINNER

When it comes to beer, I've always been strictly a Cerveza/Blue Ice + pulutan (sisig, peanuts, chicaron) kind of girl. Let's face it, in the Philippines, beer hasn't really been associated with fine dining.

San Miguel Beer is out to change that mindset with this special invitation:

May 30: High on Silver

Everyone's invited to the Dita Sandico-Ong 25th year celebration with “High on Silver!”, slated on May 30, 2010 (Sunday), from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the A-Venue Antel Lifestyle Center in Makati.

The ethical fashion designer and wrap artist welcomes you to her world of sustainable living, fashion, and her Ilocano heritage. Embrace a life of wholeness and wellness through the awareness of natural and organic products and the benefits of healthy and green living that is good for the health of people and also our Earth. The daylong event includes a bazaar / fair, live performances, music cd launches, book launches, and highlighted by the Dita Sandico Ong [25 years retrospective] fashion gala.

A “fashion and wellness bazaar” kicks off the event at 10 a.m., including exhibitors featuring Dita Sandico Ong creations, natural beauty and wellness essentials, and organic foods that promote the wholeness of mind, body, and spirit. Explore handcrafted, local, and fair trade Ilocos Sur crafts made with sustainable materials, and taste Ilocos cuisine founded on the slow food movement.

Intertwined with the gala show is the much anticipated Ilocos Sur Heritage Book series launch, where three pioneering books pay tribute to Ilocos Sur landscape, history and culture, and most importantly, its people. “Tawid: The Living Treasures of Ilocos Sur” – a publication on the traditional arts and crafts of the province – celebrates the genius and dedication of individuals and communities of craftsmen persistently continuing traditions of abel (weaving), laga (basketry), kankanen ken mainom (native delicacies and drinks), and other assorted crafts in the province such as pottery and blacksmith craft. “Tawid” or heritage in Ilocano, features write-ups and photos on the 84 Living Treasures or culture bearers – considered the heart and soul of Ilocos Sur.

Also to be launched are two coffee table books co-authored by Gov. Deogracias Victor B. Savellano. A culinary heritage book entitled “Naimas”, which means delicious in Ilocano, pays tribute to the simplicity and sustainability of Ilocos Sur cuisine, through a town by town guide to the culinary delights, culture, and the people who graciously opened their homes and their kitchens. The book, written together with Chef Heny Sison and accompanied with photography by Neal Oshima, includes treasured traditional recipes shared by the people as well as reinvented Ilocano dishes.

The highlight of the night is Dita Sandico Ong’s 25th year fashion gala, with 50 pieces from her various collections throughout the years. Indeed, she has weaved her own story of trailblazing sustainable fashion in and out of the country and at the same time helped indigenous weavers weave their dreams.

May 20-21: MaARTe Arts & Crafts Fair

Feeling nationalistic? Shop!

In this sweltering summer of politics when campaign jingles and promises fill the airwaves, cynical citizens can rekindle their love for country in MaARTe: A Contemporary Filipino Arts and Crafts Fair. Presented by the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc., National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Department of Tourism, the bazaar will run on May 20 and 21, Thursday Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Museum of the Filipino People (Old Finance Building).

Celebrating the creativity really makes this country great, weavers from the north and south showcase their fabrics and hand woven items, alongside contemporary jewelry designs by Michelline Syjuco. Colorful bags crocheted from recycled plastic and wires by the women of the Invisible Institute revive an old craft with a new twist.

To highlight the event, there will also be a concert dubbed Himig at Kultura: A Night at the Museum featuring Palawan's Sinika, Sinosikat, Drip, and Up Dharma Down on May 21, Friday, 6:00 pm. The concert will also be held at the Museum of the Filipino Courtyard.

An entrance fee of Php50 to the bazaar entitles the holder to free admission to the Museum of the Filipino People during museum hours and to the concert on May 21. Proceeds will be donated to the National Museum as a fundraiser.

So spend some time at the National Museum – see Filipino art, buy local products and revel in the glories of our ancient and evolving heritage as we celebrate Filipino Heritage Month this May.
